Stingray: “The Biggest Threat to Cell Phone Privacy”

how does a STINGRAY work? The Stingray is a "cell site simulator" used by government agencies to covertly collect information from cell phones. ??? From a police car or a drone, the Stingray sends out a signal masquerading as a cell tower, forcing nearby phones to connect to it. Then, it scans each phone's identifying info-a serial code or subscriber number-to hone in on specific devices of interest. GOSSAMER is a portable Stingray that looks like an old trans- ceiver. (It's also the name of Bugs Bunny's nemesis on Looney Tunes.) The spy tools measure phones' signal strength from multiple locations-this way, the police can precisely triangulate a target's location, or log a record of all phones in a specific area. The Stingray can block calls and messages. With some upgrades, it can also intercept them: it acts as a 'relay,' forwarding signals between the phone and the cell tower while decrypting and recording the data.
