Social Media and the Presidential Campaigns

Presidential Campaign & Social Media During the last presidential campaign, John McCain told reporters that he didn't even use e-mail, while Barack Obama garnered the support of millions via Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. In 2008, about 1 in 4 Americans got at least some of their election news online, with 67% of voters 18 to 29 and 54% of voters 50 to 64 watching political videos online. In 2012, Facebook has added nearly 1 million users, Twitter users have grown by 8 times and nearly 60 million more people watch videos online. This is how social media is ruling the 2012 presidential race. = Facebook Likes = Twitter Followers = Social Score (Facebook + Twitter) As compared to President Obama's Ron Paul Likes 680,333 Followers 16,791 Social Score 697,124 Mitt Romney Likes 1,271,480 Followers 224,051 Social Score 1,495,531 Rick Santorum Likes 43,757 Followers 57,081 Social Score 11,838 Newt Gingrich Likes 225,041 Followers 1,386,087 Social Score 1,611,128 Timeline You Tube "It Begins With Us" Barack Obama's 2012 campaign launches! 4 Apr 2011 4 Apr 2011 Mitt Romney @MittRomney @barackobama | look forward to hearing details on your jobs plan, as are 14m unemployed Americans. via Twitter 2012 You Tube "Believe in America" BARACKOBAMA.COM Mitt Romney kicks off his 2012 campaign. 11 Apr 2011 You Tube "It's Official: Newt Gingrich is Running for President." 11 May 2011 11 May 2011 Newt Gingrich @newtgingrich Today I am announcing my candidacy for president of the United States. via Twitter Newt Gingrich "I am committed to running the 09 June 2011 substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring.
