Marijuana use has sparked controversy for decades. With the popularity of both sides of the debate, it’s important to know the facts behind marijuana’s history-and its influence on society today....
http://www.online-paralegal-degree.org has created an infographic called “Up in Smoke: A Timeline of Marijuana Use in the U.S.”, which touches on facts and figures behind the subject, and the timeline of marijuana use in the United States.
The use of marijuana began back in the 1830’s, when it was sold as a medicinal compound. By the 1920’s, Mexican immigrants have popularized the use, making it becoming associated with immigrants. By 1931, 29 states have outlawed the use of marijuana. In the 1950’s mandatory sentencing takes effect for convictions involving marijuana possession and use. Fast-forward to today, and more than 12 states are promising to legalize marijuana, despite no move on the federal front to legalize it. In fact, Washington and Colorado have legalized the recreational use of small amounts of marijuana.
But with the prominent use of marijuana-at over 18.9 million users, or 7.3% of the population-it’s important to know both sides of the argument. This infographic details the arguments from both sides of the issue, and what the drug is used for medicinally, such as Tourette’s syndrome, arthritis, and even cancer. It also covers facts such as the number of individuals admitted to addiction treatment programs due to marijuana use, and the percentage of drug arrests that involve marijuana.
