"Extinction Risk and Con- servation of the World's Sharks and Rays". eLife OVERFISHING THREATENS SHARKS AND RAYS Around the world, overexploitation – through targeted fisheries and incidental catches - is taking a toll on chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays, and chimaeras). Rays are at greater risk than sharks. Habitat loss is also a major threat to many species.
