Sexual Offences in England and Wales YEAR ENDING JUNE 2013 FINDINGS FROM POLICE RECORDED CRIME AND THE CRIME SURVEY FOR ENGLAND AND WALES ONS is responsible for the publication of National Statistics on crime in England and Wales Police recorded crime data is collated by the Home Office from police forces and then supplied to ONS. Police record crimes in the year they are reported to them, which is not necessarily in the year the offence took place. Definition of sexual offences: Sexual offences recorded by the police are presented as two separate categories: rape and other sexual offences. Other sexual offences covers sexual assault, and unlawful sexual activity, which can involve consenting adults or children. The Sexual Offences Act 2003 introduced certain offences such as sexual grooming, which is included in this group. This is the largest increase in recording since current standards began Publicity around Operation Yewtree associated with Savile may be responsible for some of the 9% increase Did you know? The proportion of victims reporting to the police is known to be low The police figures exclude those offences which have not been reported to them. The Crime Survey asks respondents, in confidence, about their experience of sexual assault since age 16. Önly a small minority of people who had experienced serious sexual assault (13%), had told the police. WHAT'S BEHIND THE RISE? These figures include incidents discovered as part of Operation Yewtree. Evidence suggests increased publicity is thought to have led to more victims coming forward and reporting both historical and current offences.
