Scoliosis through History The Straight Facts on a Twisted Past WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS? Scollosis is a deformity of the spine resulting in a significant curvature from side to side. It is usually diagnosed if there is an abnormal spinal curvature of more than 10%. From behind, the condition will often form the spine into scoliosis' signature "S (or backward "S) shape. About 7 million Americans are affected by scoliosis today. Most cases are idiopathic, meaning the exact cause is unknown. The deformity is a condition as old as mankind itself. A"U" shaped headrest found among his things is beleved to have been designed to help keep his back straight. He wos buried with 130 walking sticks, thought to have served as crutches. Some oaintings show him leaning on sticks or with his legs crossed awkwardy beneath him. Hippocrates c. 460-370 B.C.E. Hippocrates cidn't have scoliosis but he was the first to use the word "scolosis" to descrioe a variety of spine conditions, from the word Greek for crooked. He was among the first to invent devices specificaly designed to straighten cnd lengthen the spine, including the Hippocratic ladder, Hippocratic board, and Hippocratic scamnum. Woman of Jerusalem c. 20 C.E. From Luke 13:10-17 Ona Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who hod been crippled by a spirit for 18 years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus Saw her, he caled her forward and sald to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Galen c. 129-200 C.E. A Roman phiosopher-physician, Galen built upon the foundation laid down by Hippocrates, dividing spine disorders into categories, assigning the term "scolicsis" to a very specific type of disorder. His definition of scoliosis is essontially the same we uso today. He also worked with and modified Hippocrates scolosis treatment devices. King Richard II 1452-1485 This English king was long believed to have been a hunchback. It was determined that he octualy suffered from scoliosis with the discovery of his skeleton in 2013. Historians and scientists speculate that Richard may have been treated with devices similar to medieval torture machines such as the infamous rack, where ropes were tied around the shoulders and legs and pulled in opposite directions. Ambroise Pare 1510-1590 Pare wos a French physician and personal surgeon to several French kings. He studied and described congenital scliosis-scolosis caused by abnormally developed vertebroe in infoncy and childhood. He designed iron corsets for children that would, in theory, help remedy scollosis and improve posture. Lewis Albert Sayre 1820-1900 Known os the Founding Father cf American Orthopedics, Sayre designed the "Sayre jacket." Patients would be suspended from their arms while a plaster of Paris cast was applied. The cost would attempt to correct the spine's curve and immobilize it in a more desirable position Katharina Shcroth 1894-1985 Shcroth, who hod scolosis herself, developed "Schroth Method" in Germany, in the 1920s. The method comprises a series of exercises, poses, and breathing techniques that systematically reduced effects of scoliosis. She pioneered the personal physical theropy aspect of scollosis treatment. Douglas MaCArthur 1880-1964 Hod scolosis that delayed his acceptance into West Point by two years, Paul R. Harrington 1876-1945 Harrington was an American orthopedic surgeon, best known as the designer of the Harrington Rod, the first implant device for the straightening and immobilization of the spine. It entered common use in the early 1960s and remained the gold standard for scolosis Elizabeth Taylor 1932-2011 Hod scolosis. Sald, I've become one of those poor ittle women who's bent sideways. surgery until the late 1990s MODERN MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENTS NOTABLE PEOPLE WITH SCOLIOSIS The first step in combatting scoliosis today is early detection. Scoliosis usually manifests itself during adolescence and teen years, so special care is taken - many schools do scoliosis Yo-Yo Ma screening, and doctors know to look out for it. In the event of scoliosis, patients have a variety of options. Modern management is usually a combination of physical therapy and monitoring, casting, bracing and surgery, depending on severity of the condition and overall health of the patient.
