MENTAL HEALTH NEWS REPORTAGE GUN LEGISLATIONS PARENTS ADULT ENTERTAINMENT VIDEO GAMES Since the technological advancements allowed, video game designers and developers have been great competition for large-budget films. Movies were the leading form of entertainment for a substantial period, as they always possessed the ability to present realistic sounds and visuals. The video game industry's potential to take over as the dominant form of entertainment was confirmed with the release of the revolutionary Doom. With a developed three-dimensional graphics engine, this video game did not dictate the path to the story's conclusion as in movies. Rather, users had freedom to explore a virtual reality. Instead of celebrating this technology's advancements, events such as the Columbine high school massacre saw the video game industry being targeted by parents, critics and the media as a probable influence on the shooters. While some content may present realistic violent representations, which intend to blur reality and fantasy, an unstable mind is more often required for the content to have influential effects. This theory appeared to be correct, as reports showed that many school shooters had mental health problems. Furthermore, the alleged desensitization effects were apparent with users, who were below the ESRB recommended age. Although it requires a certain type of individual and environment, findings have shown that desensitization can occur through repetitive play of interactive violent video games. This emphasizes the fact that the ESRB rating board is extremely important in helping to preserve the positive notions attached to the industry. Parental involvement, nation-specific colour coding and age-restricted advertising have all been examined as possible ways to improve how video games are screened. Press reportage on school shootings also emerged in need of reforms. A removal of this advertising would decrease awareness of such events. Adult themes in movies can be reflected in video games. However, the latter is much more interactive and is why the industry is growing rapidly. Social interaction in online games is suggested to be driving the industry's popularity and many of these online titles are realistic first-person-shooters. As a result, content is much less of an issue when the anticipated consumer plays it. SHOOTINGS INJURED DEATHS
