Same Energy, More Power: Accelerating Energy Efficiency in Asia

SAME ENERGY, MORE POWER ACCELERATING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ASIA Energy efficiency refers to approaches or strategies that yield more service value from each primary energy consumed. Making homes, vehicles, and businesses more energy efficient is seen as a largely untapped solution to addressing the problems of pollution, global warming, energy security, and fossil fuel depletion. Energy efficiency has proved to be a cost-effective strategy for building economies without necessarily growing energy consumption. SUPPLY-SIDE VS. DEMAND-SIDE ENERGY EFFICIENCY SUPPLY-SIDE DEMAND-SIDE Improved efficiency in the production and delivery of electricity and heat Improved efficiency at the point of final energy consumption new efficient power plants products and appliances ::: power plant upgrades building design and use transmission and distribution upgrades alternative transport Uses less energy input and produces the same or more energy at the generation and distribution segment Lowers energy consumption without compromising personal comfort or organizational competitiveness DEVELOPING ASIA'S SHARE OF PRIMARY GLOBAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION SHARE OF COMMERCIAL ENERGY USE IN ASIA BETWEEN 2003 AND 2010 70% This trend reflects Asia's increasing role as a center of manufacturing, and its status of claiming over half of all global megacities. 85% INDUSTRY & BUILDINGS 34% 56% 2010 2035 INVESTMENTS NEEDED TO MEET NATIONAL TARGETS BY 2020 required investment PRC* " energy efficiency strategy/ action plan O $ 865,260 MILLION reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 40%-45% from 2005 level by 2020 INDIA II VIET NAM II O $ 67,830 MILLION u reduce emissions intensity of GDP by by 2020 OS $ 649 MILLION u reduce energy consumption by 3%-5% by 2010 and 5%-8% by 2010 to 2015 2005 level MYANMAR PHILIPPINES II O $ 165 MILLION O $ 601 MILLION uu reduce primary energy consumption by 5% in 2020 and 8% by 2030 compared to business-as-usual uu reduce final energy consumption by 10% in all sectors from 2007 to 2014 THAILAND MALAYSIA I INDONESIA III O $ 2,006 MILLION O $ 901 MILLION O $ 6,019 MILLION u reduce the energy intensity of GDP 25% by 2030 relative to business-as-usual uu reduce final energy consumption in industrial, commercial, & residential u decrease energy intensity by 1% annually and decrease energy-GDP elasticity to below 1% by 2025 sectors by 10% from 2011 to 2030 * PRC = People's Republic of China IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY AT HOME More efficient A 40% on energy save Less efficient G] Compact fluorescent lights use 2/3 less energy & may last 6-10x longer than incandescent light bulbs Current energy efficient refrigerators use 40% less energy than their 2001 models Many countries identify energy efficient appliances using energy input labeling AT THE WORKPLACE Low-cost passive infrared sensors switch off lighting when areas are unoccupied Proper placement of windows and skylights can reduce the need for artificial lighting Deep energy refrofit - a whole-building analysis and construction process using "integrative design" - can result in energy savings of 30% or more IN TRANSPORTATION Improved aerodynamics to minimize drag can increase vehicle fuel efficiency Fuel economy can be improved by up to 3.3% by keeping tires inflated to the correct pressure The mainstream trend in automotive efficiency is the rise of electric vehicles SOURCES • Asian Development Bank (2013) Accelerating Energy Efficiency Investment and Demand-Side Interventions ADB Asian Development Bank FIGHTING POVERTY IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC • Efficient Energy Use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient_energy_use wwW.ADB.ORG
