Safari Smart

Safari Smart: The low down on the wildlife you're bound to encounter in the bush. Our favourite pachyderm: The African Elephant is the largest land animal on the planet, the largest one ever recorded standing four metres at the shoulder and weighing 10 tonnes. Their trunks are delicate enough to pick up a single peanut, yet strong enough to knock out a lion with a single swing. Our long-necked wonder: Giraffes are the world's tallest animals with new-borns already standing at two metres high. They never lie down (not even to sleep) so as to avoid being targeted by predators and they sleep in five minute stretches for no more than 30 minutes a day. Our striped steed : Our spotted friend: Cheetahs are the fastest animals in the world and Zebras actually have black stripes on a white skin, not the opposite, which serve the purpose of confusing predators and insects. No two zebra's stripes are the same - they are like its fingerprints with each having a unique pattern. can reach up to 100 kilometres per hour in seconds. Unsurprisingly, they are very successful hunters and were even trained centuries ago to catch prey. Our mane king: Male lions are are the first to enjoy a kill despite all the hunting being done by the females. During one sitting a lion can eat up to 25 percent of its bodyweight, which in the case of an adult male, can be as much as 200 kilograms. R.O. TR
