The place was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue recreation center. DJ Kool Herc threw a back-to-school party for his sister Clindy. During this party, Herc intro- duced a new Djing technique he had been per- fecting in which he extended the break beat of a song by mixing the same spot from two identical records. Different crews adopted this style, and started playing at local parks, rec centers, schools and clubs. It gave the I something to be a part of, besides the many street gangs of the time.
