Road Accidents in Regards to Left and Right-hand Sided Driving

·[ THE ROADSIDE DEBATE « Which one is safer, right-hand or left-hand traffic? Is there even a difference? Instead of guessing, let's dive into the statistics we''ve compiled from four different countries: the USA and Germany, which have right-hand traffic, and the UK and Australia, which have left-hand traffic. Highway facts and car statistics 230,735 KM 6,406,296 KM 371,913 KM 811,603 KM Highway length in countries 10 302 17 38 How many Great walls is that? 357,021 KM2 9,826,675 KM? 243,610 KM2 7,692,024 KM2 Total area of the country 43,431,000 253,108,389 34,522,300 16,741,644 Total number of vehicles 572 797 519 695 Personal Vehicles per 1000/people 188.2 39.5 92.8 20.6 Personal Vehicles per km of Highway road CONCLUSION +63% 520/ USA has lots of cars (53% more than in UK per person), but a lot less cars per 1 kilometer of highway road. This means that highways are more congested in the UK, but even more so in Germany where there are more than 4 times more cars per 1 kilometer of highway than in US. Accidents statistics Total amount of accidents 2,235,318 10,400,000 on 2008 730,000 653 853 0.05 0.04 Accidents per vehicle 0.02 0.03 .which means that one out 19 24 47 25 of X cars get in an accident 0.03 0.04 Accidents per capita 0.01 0.02 Every Xth population member suffers an accident 36 30 86 35 9.6 1.6 Per kilometer of road 1.9 0.8 Fatal accidents statistics 4,152 33,808 2,222 1,488 Total amount of fatal personal vehicle accidents USA has times more fatal car accidents per year than the other countries combined. 11 93 4 Fatal accidents / day 85 111 38 50 Road fatalities / million inhabitants Over the course of 100 million miles driven, left sided traffic is shown to be safer, with Australia and UK having less accidents than the U.S. and Germany. 1.1 0.9 100 0.5 0.6 Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled Fatal crashes per vehicle type Fatal crashes in right-sided countries is considerably higher, but pedestrian safety is especially at risk. = BICYCLES = MOTOR VEHICLES = PEDESTRIANS LEFT HAND DRIVING 11.6% 12.2% 14.8% 1.9% 73.6% 85.9% UK & Germany, countries where they have less cars/1000 people and higher density of cars have higher percentage of pedestrian traffic fatalities. In Germany elderly people are involved in more accidents than in other countries. LEET EYE ............. EYE DOMINANCE Approximately two-thirds of the population is right-eye dominant, one-third is left-eye dominant, and in a very small portion of the population neither is dominant. ...........• RIGHT EYE Handedness (to further support left hand hypothesis) RIGHT-HANDEDNESS MIXED-HANDEDNESS AMBIDEXTERITY Right-handedness is most common. Right-handed people are more dexterous with their right hands when performing tasks. 80% of the world population is right-handed. Mixed-Handedness is the change of hand preference between different tasks. This is common in the population with about a 30% prevalence. Ambidexterity is exceptionally rare, although it can be learned. A truly ambidextrous person is able to do any task equally well with either hand. Those who learn it still tend to favor their originally dominant hand. DISTRACTED ACCIDENTS Distraction has been identified as a contributing factor in 22% of car crashes Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting and increases your risk of an accident RANDOM TRAFFIC FACTS More pedestrians are killed on crosswalks than by jaywalking. Drivers make 15 decisions per kilometre. Morning rush hour is twice as safe as evening rush hour. Cars spend 95% of their time parked. The second leading cause of distraction-related crashes (behind fatigue) is drivers looking at other crashes. You have a 1 in 100 chance of dying in a car accident in your lifetime. There is also a discussion whether driving on the left or right-hand side of the road contributes to more accidents. Currently, 166 countries drive on the right side, compared to 74 that drive on the left.
