West Bengal was chosen as the place for the first IIT to be setup considering it had the highest number of industries in post- independence India. IIT-Bombay 1958 The IIT at Mumbai (formerly Bombay), was setup in 1958 by the government of India. UNESCO and the Soviet Union provided the government assis- tance in the establishment of the institution, by providing them with equipment and expertise. IIT-Bombay has been ranked higher than all other Indian institutes on the QS Asian University Rank- ings recently. 1959 IIT-Kanpur & IIT-Madras IIT-Kanpur was started at the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur, before it moved to its current campus in 1963. The This IT was established at Chennai (formerly Madras) in 1959 on a 620 acre campus neigh- bouring a national park. The institute was set up by the government of India along with assistance from the government of the erst- while West Germany. The institute has over 12 departments and 6 research centres, and was set up following an accord signed by the govern- ment of India and the All Assam Students Union in 1985 to improve education in the state. 2001 IIT-Roorkee This institute was established in 1847 to help in public works and was con- verted into an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. The institute has about 18 departments and claims to have the most number of academic units in the country. The institute also has another campus in Sahranpur. IIT-Bhubaneshwar IIT-Gandhinagar IIT-Hyderabad 2008 8 more IIT-Patna The year 2008 saw the establishment of 6 new IITS namely. These institutes were set up through The Institutes of Technology (amendment) Act, 2011. IIT-Rajasthan IIT-Ropar 2 more .. 2009 Following the amendment passed, two more IITS were set up at Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. These would add to the 7 other institutes being established by the amendment act. IIT-BHU-Varanasi 2009 The ninth and final IIT to be established by the amendment act is the Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The institute was earlier managed by the University and became the IIT-BHU-Varanasi after a bill was passed in this regard in 2011.
