THE RISE OF BLOGGING Here at moo.com, we love to blog. But when did it all begin? We investigate the rise of blogging and the indivduals who made it happen! Justin Hall begins eleven of personal blogging on links.net 1994 years 1997 In 17th December, the term 'weblog' is coined by Jorn Barger, author of blog Robot Wisdom. In October of this year, Bruce Ableson launches Open Diary, the first blogger community to allow comments. 1998 Meanwhile, Jonathan Dube from the Charlotte Observer was the first to use a blog format to report news during Hurricane Bonnie. 1999 Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan of Pyra Labs launch Blogger.com. в In March, Brad Fitzpatrick starts LiveJournal. The term 'blog' was coined by Peter Mertholz, splitting the term 'weblog' into 'We Blog' on his personal blog peterme.com. Prolific website Boing Boing 2000 relaunches its site to become a blog. 2001 The predecessor to WordPress, B2/Cafelog is created by developer Michel Valdrighi. The CMS platform Drupal is launched as an open source project. People begin to use blogs to express their opinions and even got into trouble! In the first report of its type, Heather Armstrong is fired after discussing her work on her personal blog dooce.com. 2002 The emergence of 'How-to' and tutorial articles helped to grow the blogging community. Also, American politician Trent Lott resigns due to comments reported on blogs. Gizmodo, a technology blog is launched in August. AT THIS POINT, THERE ARE 200,000 ACTIVE BLOGGER USERS 2003 Blogging becomes big this year. The first gossip blog, Gawker.com is launched. Jason Calacanis launches a network of blogs called Weblogs coveringa variety of topics. 'Blog' is declared word of the year by 2004 the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. In March, 'Salam Pax', an anonymous Iraqi blogger gains a worldwide audience during the Iraq War. Two more blogging platforms are launched with SixApart launching Typepad and WordPress being released on May 27th. The BlogHer community holds their first conference in San Jose. Picasa and its photo-sharing utility 'Hello' are brought into Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs. Google also purchases Blogger and acquires AdSense from Oingo Inc. It matches ads to blog content. The first video blog is launched, a whole year before YouTube! One of the first social networking sites, Thomas 'Tom' Anderson, co-founds Myspace with options for users to blog on their profile pages. IN APRIL 2003, THERE ARE 1,000,000 BLOGGER ACCOUNTS IN 2004, TECHNORATI INDEXES 4,000,000 BLOGS ACROSS THE INTERNET 2005 The Huffington Post news blog is launched as well as video sharing service YouTube. Following its move to Google, all Blogger 2006 blogs are associated with a Google account and moved to Google servers. Themes are introduced into WordPress 1.5 with its public release later in the year on November 21st. Matt Mullenweg oversees the release. Google also pays $900 million to become the provider of myspace.com. Weblogs is sold to AOL for $25 million. Mashable and TechCrunch are Twitter is also launched launched while LiveJournal is bought by SixApart in January. this year by Obvious Corp. Internet Explorer also announced they would adopt the Firefox feed icon. This will be used to represent RSS and Atom feeds which has become Jack Dorsey, creator and co-founder of Twitter industry standard. Pete Cashmore, founder of Mashable IN 2007, TECHNORATI INDEXES 70 MILLION BLOGS ACROSS THE INTERNET 2007 Ugo.com, a games and entertainment blog is sold for $100 million. More than 1000 WordPress plugins are available, despite being blocked in Turkey. Blogger is ranked 16 in the top 50 domains for unique visitors. Chinese blogger Hu Jia is jailed for 2008 'inciting subversion of state power'. Tumblr is launched with 75000 users within two weeks, popularising the term 'microblog'. In May, Posterous is released giving users the functionality to post short updates using a unique URL shortening service. They also offered new ways of posting via email or online chat. LiveJournal is sold to Russian Media Company SUP Media for $25million. David Karp, founder of Tumblr Garry Tan, co-founder of Posterous THE HIGHEST EARNING BLOG OF 2009 IS THE HUFFINGTON POST MAKING $2,330,000 IN 2009, TUMBLR HOSTED 11 MILLION A MONTH MICROBLOGS IN 2009, THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF WORDS ON A WORDPRESS BLOG IS 250 The White House launches its own blog. 2009 Tumblr's CEO David Karp is named Best Young Tech Entepreneur by Business Week, It also launches an iPhone app along with Posterous. 2010 WordPress wins the Hall of Fame CMS category in the Open Source Awards with over 11,000 plugins available. pi At the same time, Posterous is named one of the Hottest Silicon Valley Companies by Lead411. 2011 The majority of bloggers are between 25 and 34, owning at least 3 blogs between them. 20 million of these blogs are based at WordPress.com. Tumblr is valued at $800 million in August of this year with President Obama creating a Tumblr blog some time later in October. Blogger goes under a major makeover to unify it with other Google-based services and to integrate Google analytics. Google also launches Google+ which is quickly accepted and widely used by bloggers. 2012 62% of businesses now own and run a blog. 48% of the top 100 blogs now use WordPress. 54.9 million blogs are hosted at WordPress.com with 20,950 plugins available. Comparatively, there are now 69 million blogs hosted on Tumblr, with 29.6 billion posts between them. There are more than 30 million accounts registered on LiveJournal with 15 million users using Posterous, despite being obtained by Twitter in March.
