Retirement? You're Having a Laugh! - The Royle Family

RETIREMENT? YOU'RE HAVING A LAUGH! Age creeps up on all of us - even the nation's beloved TV stars. The actors who starred in iconic sitcoms like Only Fools & Horses, Keeping Up Appearances, The Royle Family and I'm Alan Partridge are now firmly established national treasures - but how would the characters they played cope with the financial challenges of retirement? At My Retirement Options, we took a look at how much it might have cost some of Britain's most popular sitcom characters to maintain their on-screen lifestyles. Jim & Barbara Royle: The Royle Family PENSIONS? my ärse! £9,812 Cost of living Manchester's cost of living is one of the UK's highest outside London, so the Wythenshawe-dwelling Royle's might have faced a relatively expensive retirement even for basic expenses. Welcome to WYTHENSHAWE £1,664 Drinking in the Feathers The only time Jim Royle was regularly seen to rise from his favourite armchair - aside for his frequent, loudly-publicised trips to the toilet - was to sneak down to The Feathers for a pint or three. Given that the average British male consumes 23 units of alcohol per week, and the average cost of a pint of lager in Manchester is £3.20, Jim would have spent an average of £1,664 per year on booze. THE FEATHERS £1,084 Cigarettes Not that long-suffering Royle family matriarch Barbara was without her vices. She and daughter Denise were seldom seen without a cigarette in their hand, and the overflowing ashtrays indicated a serious habit. Even if Barbara smoked an average of 10 cigarettes per day, she could expect to spend over £1,000 per year - rising to £2,900 if she smoked 20 per day. ROYALES Smoking kills U TV LICENSING £1,084 TV Licence There's a reason Royle Family star and co-creator Caroline Aherne now provides voiceover work on Channel 4's Gogglebox - the Royles were Britain's original armchair television critics. Until they hit the age of 75, Jim and Barbara would still have to pay £145 per year for a TV licence, even if there was never anything good on. CERRLO EUMICOE 000 MY ARSE! Total: Jim Royale £12,705 per year Conclusion: Jim and Barbara could probably survive on a relatively modest pension - but they'd have to make some cutbacks, and if they want to enjoy a long and healthy retirement they might want to start by giving up the booze and fags. ) My Retirement Options Guiding you through a changing market
