RETHINKING IRASH TO SAVE LIVES Lack of Access 1 Billion People Lack Access to Healthcare Systems Worldwide EVERY YEAR PREVENTABLE DEATHS 35 million more children may die between 2015 and 2028 from 45% of child deaths occur during the neonatal period and are due to birth mostly preventable complications causes 6 million children around the world die before their 5th birthday due to inadequate medical care Complications such as Premature Birth and Birth Asphyxia THE LEADING CAUSES OF CHILD DEATHS ARE PNEUMONIA DIARRHEA MALARIA 36 MILLION PEOPLE TUBERCULOSIS die worldwide kills every year because 1.7 million of noncommunicable people each year diseases Many of these deaths and illnesses could be prevented and treated by the things we throw away. Hospitals in the U.S. generate 4 billion pounds of medical waste per year EMERGENCY 85% is non-infectious Many discarded items are still usable elsewhere Items may be thrown out due to things like: over ordering expiration dates remodeling regulations that affect usability room for updated equipment WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE WASTE? REGULATED EXCESS MEDICAL WASTE MEDICAL WASTE Often infectious waste such as blood, cultures, body waste, used needles and scalpels Noninfectious items such as expired, broken, outdated supplies, and equipment - Thrown away Thrown away - Incinerated - Incinerated -Recycled - Re-used - Fixed - Reprocessed Communities in the developing world often lack the most basic resources to meet their needs Medical Surplus Recovery Organizations (MSROS) MSROS are impacting the world by - Saving lives and reducing landfill use - Collecting excess medical waste from individuals and through partnerships with hospitals and medical institutions - Sorting donated supplies and equipment and sending them where they're most needed SUPPLIES OVER SEAS (SOS) is one of the leading MSROS in the United States SOS has kept over 800 tons of usable medical supplies out of landfills to date and those numbers continue to grow Over the years, the supplies and equipment recovered by SOS have delivered health and hope to under-resourced communities in over 100 countries. 81 SoS supplies reach communities in a number of different ways. - Some supplies are hand carried in the luggage of medical mission teams - Some supplies are shipping on a 40ft seagoing container Each 40 ft shipping container can hold up to 6-8 tons, or approximately $250,000 of medical supplies Almost 100% of the materials donated to SOS 100% would otherwise end up in our landfills Approximately 95% of the materials SOS receives are repurposed, donated, or recycled SoS promotes: Global health Environmental stewardship International Humanitarian Aid 95% HOW CANYOU HELP?
