Some celebrate the birth of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, that took place after the churming of the cosmic ocean of milk; Lakshmi's birth is believed to bring in prosperity every year. Jains celebrate it as the day Mahavira attained Nirvana. But why do we REALLY celebrateo Because it is the quintessential big fat Indian festival that means sweets, crackers, love, blessings, new clothes, diyas, shopping, card games, good luck, reconciliation, a new start.. and everything else that one can think of as an Indian celebration!
