A further 65 road deaths per year were caused by drivers who were under the drink-drive limit but who had significant amounts of alcohol in their blood. Experts have estimated that lowering the drink-drive limit to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood could save 65 lives and 230 serious injuries in Britain each year. According to a survey of 1,000 drivers by Brake and Direct Line, one in three UK drivers admit to driving after drinking any amount of alcohol in the last year. 60% of people think it takes at least 2 units of alcohol to affect them while 19% of A level of 20-50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood leaves drivers with a three times greater risk of dying in a car crash than those with no alcohol. people think it takes three to four, or more units to affect them. With a level of 50-80mg you are six times more likely and with 80-100mg, 11 times more likely. A total of 123,956 drivers were required to take a breath test in 2013, and 21,091 requests were made on a Friday between 8am and 7pm Of those people 3,727 (3%) either failed the breath test of refused to provide a specimen.
