Ramadan 2013: Key Facts

From 9 July, many practicing Muslims will be observing the holy month of Ramadan for some 30 days. They will focus on good works, spirituality and community.

Ramadan
Depending on the new moon, Ramadan will be from 9 July to 8 August

Fasting
From dawn to sunset, this year’s UK fasts will be some 18 hours long

No Food Or Water
Food, water and sexual relations only after dark

Fit and able
Children, pregnant women, the old, sick and travelers do not fast

Spiritual Devotion
Muslims focus on prayer and reading the Qur’an, as the holy book was revealed during this month.

Charity
Giving to good causes and generosity to neighbors are encouraged

IFTAR
Fasting ends as sunset with dates and a meal

EID
The festival of Eid marks the end of Ramadan
