Protecting Your Horse From Disease
PROTECTING YOUR HORSE FROM DISEASE AN INFOGRAPHIC BROUGHT TO YOU BY theHORSE A disease outbreak can be dangerous and expensive. FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO HELP YOUR HORSES STAY HEALTHY Work with your veterinarian to develop a preventive herd health protocol, including testing for equine infectious anemia (Coggins test), vaccinating, diet, and deworming. Know your horse's normal temperature, 2 pulse, and respiration, so you can recognize when something's wrong. Assign each horse his own buckets, halter/lead, grooming equipment, and tack. TRIGGER 4 Wash and disinfect shared equipment between horses. Limit standing water/mosquito breeding grounds around the farm. Keep feed secure to deter rodents. Off the farm, do not allow your horse to drink from communal water sources and use only your own equipment. Also avoid nose- to-nose contact between horses. (X) Isolate new or returning horses until your vet confirms they don't have disease. Tend to isolated horses only after caring for the rest of the herd. 10 Require shippers/owners of all arriving horses to present a current negative Coggins test for each horse. 11 Have human visitors wash/sanitize their hands when arriving at/exiting the farm and between handling different horses. SOAP If you do suspect a sick horse on your property, call your vet and follow the tips on preventing disease spread at TheHorse.com/Outbreak 12 (oo) X0X-00o Practice these biosecurity steps every day, not just in the face of an outbreak.
