PROTECTING BORNEO'S HEART The lush forests of the world's third largest non-continental island - among the fast-shrinking band of forests functioning as the earth's lungs - are being conserved to provide sustainable livelihood for local populations and a safe haven for thousands of animal and plant species. Threatened biodiversity Lost livelihood opportunities Denuded and Higher cost of forest rehabilitation destroyed forests STRENGTHENING PUBLIC & PRIVATE CAPACITIES The Government of Indonesia has requested ADB assistance to strengthen the capacity of public and private sector institutions in sustainable biodiversity and forest management in the HoB. The project will address issues such as: weaknesses in natural resource governance A technical assistance of about $4.5 million for the deficiencies in land use and spatial planning Government of Indonesia includes grants from ADB's Climate Change Fund and the Regional Cooperation and Integration Fund. It also includes over $2.5 million from the Global Environment Facility. inadequate management, funding, and limited expanse of conservation areas The project, which will be carried out by Indonesia's Directorate of Environmental Services and Conservation insufficient incentives for sustainable resource management Areas is expected to run from September 2013 to August 2016.
