PROTECTING BORNEO'S HEART The lush forests of the world's third largest non-continental island - among the fast-shrinking band of forests functioning as the earth's lungs - are being conserved to provide sustainable livelihood for local populations and a safe haven for thousands of animal and plant species. ADB Asian Development Bank FIGHTING POVERTY IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC wwW.ADB.ORG TERRITORY OF BORNEO HEART OF BORNEO (HoB) Divided among 3 countries: Covers about 22 million hectares O Brunei Darussalam Home to approximately 6% of the world's biodiversity 2 Sarawak and Sabah, Malaysia One of the few areas on earth where large-scale conservation can still be implemented 3 Kalimantan Island, Indonesia PEOPLE AND ECONOMY IN TODAY'S HEART OF BORNEO The ecosystem services provided by the HoB have a significant impact on the lives of about 12 million local & indigenous peoples, including over 200 Dayak groups who depend heavily on its resources for their subsistence. PALM OIL MINING LOGGING TOURISM HYDROPOWER LIVELIHOOD LUNGS OF THE EARTH CO2 co2 CO The large carbon sequestration and storage capacity of the HoB makes it an important component of the fast-shrinking band of equatorial forests that function as the lungs of the earth. 1997-1998 ABOUT 1 MILLION M OVER 50% OF HARVESTED TIMBER IN KALIMANTAN WAS ILLEGAL OF TIMBER ARE SMUGGLED FROM KALIMANTAN TO SABAH 1990s REVENUE LOSS DUE TO SMUGGLING: EVERY YEAR OVER $580 MILLION BUT WAIT IN ADDITION TO FORGONE REVENUE FROM ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES, THE AREA IS LEFT WITH. Threatened biodiversity Lost livelihood opportunities Denuded and Higher cost of forest rehabilitation destroyed forests STRENGTHENING PUBLIC & PRIVATE CAPACITIES The Government of Indonesia has requested ADB assistance to strengthen the capacity of public and private sector institutions in sustainable biodiversity and forest management in the HoB. The project will address issues such as: weaknesses in natural resource governance A technical assistance of about $4.5 million for the deficiencies in land use and spatial planning Government of Indonesia includes grants from ADB's Climate Change Fund and the Regional Cooperation and Integration Fund. It also includes over $2.5 million from the Global Environment Facility. inadequate management, funding, and limited expanse of conservation areas The project, which will be carried out by Indonesia's Directorate of Environmental Services and Conservation insufficient incentives for sustainable resource management Areas is expected to run from September 2013 to August 2016.
