Principles of Food Photography

THe PRINCIPLES OF FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY created by http://www.robbennettphotography.co.uk rob photographer What's the right kit? A macro lens is a good choice; wide angles lenses are not really suitable for close-up; a macro lens provides tight shots - perfect for food photography Depth of field This is vital for food photography, as it relates to what is in focus and what isn't. Depth and aperture are both considerations when experimenting with distance. Make it real Don't be afraid to make the photo look as realistic as possible. Make the food as though it's been eaten - make crumbs your friend! Think about the story you want to tell Food photography is there to tell a story, not just to take pictures of scrambled egg. Good food photography invites the viewer with the story told by the image. Use backlighting Effective use of backlighting is a useful tool, it adds atmosphere and a mood, and you don't want to use a flash if you can avoid it. Find the right angles Certain foods or recipes have a strong visual identity depending on which angle they are taken from. For example, tiered cakes will often need to be photographed from below. Be fluid with composition Don't be afraid to take risks with composition as you take photos. If a certain arrangement isn't working, then don't be afraid to change it. Crop & bring in decoration Don't forget to populate your photos with decorative elements such as cutlery, crockery or napkins. They add to the overall mood and style of the photography. Don't splash out You might find yourself able to do more with less when it comes to food photography and don't need to splash out on lots of expensive equipment. It's often the case that limiting yourself can force you to be creative. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/aug/01/food-photography-tricks-of-trade http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/feb/06/improve-food-photography-felicity- cloake http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-photograph-food CH
