PRA Inheritance

Inheritance of PRA meow- PRA is a hereditary eye disorder which is believed to result in cats going blind. The diagram below illustrates the inheritance when mating PRA positive, negative and carrier cats together. PRA Positive, Negative & Carrier Cats Positive Carrier Negative Negative x Negative Resulting Kittens 100% Negative Negative x Carrier Resulting Kittens 50% Negative & 50% Carrier Carrier x Carrier Resulting Kittens 25% Positive, 50% Negative & 25% Carrier Carrier x Positive Resulting Kittens 50% Positive & 50% Carrier Postive x Negative Resulting Kittens 100% Carrier Postive x Positive Resulting Kittens 100% Positive = Acceptable Mating = Unacceptable Mating By testing cats to see if they are positive, negative or carriers for PRA we will be able to stop breeding PRA positive cats. There does seem to be a link between PRA postive cats and blindness in cats. Though the gene is not fully understood it seems sensible to not breed cats that are PRA positive. This is easily achievable as shown above. Siamese Cat Breeder Oriental Cat Breeder www.siamese-cat-breeder.co.uk
