PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a disease that causes some cats to go blind. Two related breeds that have proved to be at risk are Oriental and Siamese cats.
PRA is an inherited disease which can be selectively bred away from with some DNA testing and some basic knowledge of genetics.
As the defective gene is recessive it must be 'donated' by both parents of a kitten and be present twice in an affected cat. By using selective breeding the risk of cats being born with both genes can be eradicated.
The infographic shows how easy it is to breed out this gene in the Siamese and Oriental cats.
