Pool Safety

POOL SAFETY Each day, about ten people die from unexpected drownings. Among the leading causes of anexpected death, drowning ranks fifth. The Consumer Product Safety 'Commission estimates that each, year almost 300 children 5 years and younger drown in swimming pools or spas. 3,200 children S years and younger are hospitalized due to pool related injuries. I The Main Factors Affecting I Drowning Lack of swimming ability Absence of barriers Failure of adult supervision Location Failure to wear a life vest Alcohol use Health disorders Enforcing as many safety steps as possible is the greatest way to promote water safety. How? Stay Close, Be Alert and Watchs Always watch your children and never leave them unattended. Keep Children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings. Have a phone close by at all times. If a child is missing, check the pool first. Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors. These are helpful tips to know when you and your family visit a public pool or spa: DO you? Learn and Practice Water Safety Skills: Know how to perform CPR on children and adults. Understand how to swim, and always swim with a buddy. Grasp the basics of life saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency. By checking to see if public pools and spas are using appropriate water safety practices, you can further assure safety for you and your family. How TO Have the Appropriate Equipment: Install a fence around the perimeter of the pool and spa of at least four feet in height. Use self-closing and self-latching gates. Ensure all pools and spas have compliant drain covers. Install door alarms from the building to the pool area. Maintain pool and spa covers in working order. Have life-saving equipment such as life rings or reaching poles available for use. For children, drownings are a preventable cause of death and injury. CPSC recommends that you create a pool safety kit to have by your pool.
