Sorriso por Sorriso: packaging for an Anti-Cavity chewing gum
The problem of dental care in Brazil is a public issue of epidemiological relevance. In the poor and underdeveloped areas of Brazil the...
re is a lack of access to dental care, leading to high incidences of tooth decay and tooth loss due to the lack of treatment. In Brazil’s northeast region the percentage of people between the ages of 12 and 18 years old who are completely toothed is only 45%, while there is only 39% in the north.
This project proposes a new type of chewing gum Sorriso por Sorriso, and its branding, packaging, and disposal of the chewed gum.
Using the leaves from the Jabuticaba tree, an antiseptic is extracted and used in the fabrication of anti-cavity chewing gum. This gum has benefits that cannot be found in any of the commercially available product. The extract fights three cultures of dental plaque: streptococcus mutan, streptococcus sobrinus, and streptococcus sanguis. The benefits of having Plinia cauliflora extract as an antiseptic gum also includes: reduction of bacterial biofilm, prevention of gingivitis, prevention of calcification of biofilm, bacterial resistance, and it is stainless.
The chewing gum will be sold to the general public with the purpose of benefiting the Brazilian government program called “Smiley Brazil.” This program focuses on underdeveloped communities in the northern part of Brazil, providing them access to basic dental care.
