Personal Navigation Devices vs Smartphone GPS

TheGPSStore.com Automotive Outdoor Marine Electronics Personal Navigation Device VS Smartphone GPS: What's Really the Better Option? The growth of GPS has caused a revolution in both safety and convenience. With a diverse set of uses, GPS technology is wel- comed wherever people need to avoid time-consuming navi- gation problems that are often associated with maps. Tradi- tionally, consumers experienced GPS navigation through dedi- cated personal navigation devices. These proven workhorses deliver complete functionality in small packages. Of course, smartphones also offer GPS without sacrificing portability. Virtually all smartphones now include GPS receivers. Without a doubt, smartphone GPS receivers have proven useful over the years, having helped many users out of problematic situations. At the same time, personal naviga- tion devices outperform smartphones in several key areas. Here are a few important ways that personal navigation devices differ from smartphones GPS units: Dedicated GPS devices are highly reliable. For all their strengths, even newer smartphones are often quite fragile compared to hardy GPS devices. Standalone navigation devices are more likely to remain usable during critical times. Standalone GPS units offer larger screens than many smartphones which is more conducive to navigation Unlike smartphones, PNDS are not concerned with background processes impacting battery life since their usage is specific for one purpose. Smartphone GPS apps can tie up important communications channels making it difficult to make or receive phone calls. This factor limits the flexibility and usefulness of smartphone GPS receivers, particularly during emergencies when maintaining communication is critical. Standalone GPS devices offer a variety of additional features such as traffic alerts, historical traffic data and voice recognition which are not typical of all smartphone apps. Update map- Many "free" smartphone navigation apps will attempt to upsell users on otherwise standard features found on standalone units. Standalone GPS devices have the advantage of maintaining a connection when a cellular network is unavailable. Since PNDS communicate directly with satellites orbiting above the earth, they are likely to remain connected even in foul weather conditions or remote landscapes. Standalone GPS units will always use specialized data from prominent mapping companies such as TeleAtlas or NavTeq, however the same is not always true for smartphone applications, including Google Maps. Tele Atlas NAVTEQ MAPS. For the average smartphone user, GPS capabili- ties are useful accessories. However for those * with serious navigational needs, standalone devices are still preferable in several key ways.
