Derlume - Acrosi The Ages The word perfume originates from the Latin phrase 'per' translating as "through" and "fumus" translating as "smoke". The French later gave the name 'parfum' because of the pleasant scents that emanated from burning incense. Perfumery – the art of making perfumes – started in ancient Egypt with the use of spices, but was refined by the Romans and Arabs. Although perfumery was also practiced in East Asia, the majority of its fragrances are based upon incenses.
