OVARIAN CANCER Fallopian tube Movary Ovary Fallopian tube Uterus What Is Ovarian Cancer? Ovarian cancer begins in your ovaries, which produce female hormones and eggs. Cervix There are 3 main types of Ovarian Cancer: 1. Epithelial - the most common type of ovarian cancer arises from cells that line or cover the ovaries and occur primarily in adults. 2. Germ cell - originates from cells that form eggs and tend to occur in young women. 90% 5% 3. Stromal cell - begins in the 5% connective cells that hold the ovaries together. Did You Know? OVARIAN CANCER affects about 21,000 women in the U.S.AY who are diagnosed every year 15,000 women in the U.S.A. die every year these stats have not changed in 30 years RISK FACTORS OF OVARIAN CANCER There is no way to know for sure if you will get ovarian cancer but several factors may increase your risk if you: • Are middle-aged or older • Have close family members who have had ovarian, breast or gastrointestinal cancer • Have a genetic mutation such as BRCĂ1 or BRCA2 • Have had breast, uterine, or colorectal (colon) cancer • Have never given birth or have had trouble getting pregnant SYMPTOMS OF OVARIAN CANCER If any of these symptoms last for more than two weeks or are unusual for you, please see your doctor: • Bloating • Feeling full quickly while eating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Urinary urgency or frequency or changes in bowel habits • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge • Back pain Early detection is important for a better prognosis TREATMENTS FOR OVARIAN CANCER Female Reproductive Anatomy Fallopian tube Fallopian Ovary Uterus Ovary Types of Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: A surgical procedure to remove one ovary and one fallopian tube. surgery include: Cervix De-Bulking: A surgical procedure to remove the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes,omentum, lymph nodes and all visible cancer. Bilateral Vagina salpingo-oophorectomy: A surgical procedure to remove both ovaries and both fallopian tubes. Surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible is called a de-bulking and should only be done by a gynecologic oncologist. Treatment for ovarian cancer depends on the extent of the disease but may include: Chemotherapy: treatment to stop the growth of cancer cells, is delivered into the body through a vein (intravenous) or directly into the abdominal cavity (intraperitoneal) Temalherapy Radiation therapy: the use of high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing .
