Oue Hag First unofficial national flag of the Continental army merged the British "Union Jack" and the 13 stripes of the colonies. During the war of 1812 with the British, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem expressing his relief in seeing the US flag stil bombardment that would be set to music and become our national anthem in 1931.
