Every year, Americans are responsible for a quarter of the world's oil consumption. Only a small minority of that oil comes from U.S. wells; the rest we import from Canada, South America and the Middle East. The situation has prompted lawmakers and lobbyists from all over the political spectrum to express deep concerns about U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
