A Walk around the Security Perimeter of Office 365 Before you move your business's data into the cloud you probably want to check out the place where it will be stored, get a sense of the people who'lIl be standing guard, and find out what extra measures you can take to make sure it's secure. CLOU D SE CUR ITY Secure Location Modular Datacenter: All the physical storage components come into the facilities sealed up in shipping containers, where they remain for as long as they are in use. Data stored on physical disks is encrypted. Guards Access is restricted to necessary job functions with measures including: badges, smart cards, video surveillance, security officers, two-factor authentication, motion sensors, and biometric scanners. (c-) Passwords New Password ******* Office 365 makes employees change their passwords every 90 days, sets minimum character requirements, and uses CAPTCHA prompts and lockouts after multiple failed log-ins. You also have the option of requiring Multifactor Authentication, which means in addition to passwords users have to type in codes sent to some other device. Re-Enter Password ******* Devices Remote Wipes can be done from any browser by the device owner (in case of theft) or by the administrator. Administrators can also force passwords on Office 365 files on remote devices. Email Documents Information Rights Management (IRM) allows you to put a wrapper around a document that carries instructions for how it can and can't be used. You can prevent people from opening, editing, printing, copying, or forwarding the document. You can also set an expiration date for it. IRM Transport Rules Administrators can create rules to ensure compliance with official standards like HIPAA. In the Air All Office 365 data is protected by ISO 27001 encyption Many people are uneasy about giving up physical possession of the hardware housing their data. And just like your on-premises datacenters, information stored in the cloud is vulnerable to threats from numerous sources. But cloud providers have far more resources to devote to warding off these threats. All the advanced security measures in Office 365 actually make your data quite a bit safer than it would be on-prem-in the same way that cash in the bank is safer than it would be under the mattress.
