Nutrition in Mature Adults In the UK An overview of nutrition and Calcium the common nutritional deficiencies of the over 65's in the UK. 4% of Over 65's Are Deficient* Iron This rises to 15% for free-living women aged 85+. As well strenthening bones and teeth calcium helps nerve cells, blood clotting muscles and keeping a normal heartbeat. 5% of Over 65's Are Deficient* This rises to 6% for free- living women aged 75-84. A lack of Iron can result Vitamin A in Anaemia. 2% of Over 65's Are Deficient* Zinc This rises to 6% for free -living men aged 75-84. Helps to form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, bone and soft tissue. 8% of Over 65's Are Deficient* This rises to 15% for free- Vitamin B2 living men aged 85+. Zinc is needed for the immune system to function properly. 2% of Over 65's Are Deficient* Magnesium This rises to 6% for free-living women aged 85+. Also known as 19% of over 65's Riboflavin, this helps red blood cell production. Are Deficient* This rises to 34% for free-living women aged 75-84. This deficiency is particularly worrying in this age given that there is a higher risk of Oesteoporosis. Magnesium is an essential nutrient that helps the transportation of energy and the contraction of muscles. Symptoms of deficiency include muscle Folic Acid 4% of Over 65's Are Deficient* This rises to 11% for Obsidian Dawn free-living women aged 85+. This is a type of B vitamin, the synthetic form of folate.
