The M Nonprofit Sector in Brief: Quick Facts About Nonprofits Nonprofit Organizations Public Charity Finances Foundation Giving • In 2011, public charities reported over $1.59 trillion in total revenues and $1.49 trillion in total expenses. Of the revenue: • Foundations gave $46.9 billion in 2011, up 2.2 percent from 2010. • 1,406,820 tax-exempt organizations, including: * 945,415 public charities * 71% came from independent foundations * 22% came from contributions, gifts and government grants * 96,765 private foundations * 9% came from community foundations * 364,640 other types of nonprofit organizations, including chambers of commerce, fraternal organizations and civic leagues * 72% came from program service revenues, which include government fees and contracts * 11% came from corporate foundations * In 2010, nonprofits accounted for 9.2% of all wages and salaries paid in the United States * 6% came from "other" sources including dues and rental income 9% came from operating foundations * Public charities reported $2.87 trillion in total assets in 2011 Charitable Giving in America: Some Facts and Figures Individuals: 72% - $228.93 vs. Bequests: 7% - $23.41 Giving around the Holidays: December: 64% vs. November: 36% Foundations: 15% - $45.74 vs. Corporations: 6% - $18.15 2012 contributions: $316.23 Billion by source of contributions (in billions of dollars - all figures are rounded) Charity Volunteering Volunteers are an integral part of the nonprofit sector and help make many of the services nonprofits provide possible. At average private wages, volunteer labor was valued at $283.84 billion in 2010 nearly as much as donations. Gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations, and bequests reached an estimated $290.89 billion in 2010. 70 • Approximately 26.5% of Americans over the age of 16 volunteered through or for an organization between September 2009 and September 2012. This 30 proportion has remained relatively constant since 2003 after a slight increase from 27.4% to 28.8% in 2003. Charitable Giving • Charitable contributions by individuals, foundations, bequests, and corporations reached $298.42 billion in 2011, an increase of 0.9% from the revised 2010 estimates and $. after adjusting for inflation. Cf these charitable contributions: * Religious organizations received the largest share, with 32% of total estimated contributions. 24 * Educational institutions received the second largest percentage, with 13% of total estimated contributions. * Human service organizations accounted for 12% of total estimated contributions in 2010, the third largest share.
