PGoogle 2011 TM ALGORITHM CHANGES OF CONTENT ATTRIBUTION UPDATE FIRST PANDA UPDATE (AKA FARMER UPDATE) JAN Google releases an update that is designed to improve their ability to weed out content scrapers through better con- tent attribution. Was this the birth of Panda? FEB 23 Google releases the first Panda update which impacted up to 12% of search results according to Google. This algorithm update was to enhance their abilities to seek out and de- value content farms, thin con- 28 Coogle tent sites, sites with excessive GOOGLE LAUNCHES +1 BUTTON advertising, and websites with poor quality content. MAR Google launches the +1 button to add a social element to search. The +1 button 30 allows users to influence the results displayed to people that are members of their Google Plus circles. Up to 12 sitelinks for a listing had been seen at the time. 6 sitelinks appear to be the norm. GOOGLE INTRODUCES PANDA UPDATE 2.5 SEP Another minor Panda update according to Google, but nu- merous site reported large losses. The Today Show web- site was one of the biggest losers with this update. NEW "REL" ATTRIBUTES Google introduced rel="next" SEP and rel"prev" attributes as 28 15 potential solutions to crawl and duplicate content issues caused by pagination. TODAY rel="next" rel="prev" MATT CUTTS TWEETS SEARCH PRIVACY ANNOUNCED ABOUT PANDA "FLUX" OCT Google announced that people that are logged into their Google account were being directed to the Google SSL version of the search engine that would encrypt their search queries for privacy reasons. This could have a large impact on internet marketers down the road. OCT Matt Cutts tweeted about a Panda related flux that was to occur within a few weeks. The flux dates appear to have been 10/9 (Panda 2.5.1), 10/13 (Panda 2.5.2), 10/19-20 (Panda 2.5.3). Panda 2.5.3 turned out to have a major impact on results. 05 18 Ewitter MATT CUTTS ANNOUNCES 10 ALGORITHM UPDATES GOOGLE FRESHNESS UPDATE NOV In an apparent attempt to be a little more transparent, Matt Cutts outlines 10 recent algorithm changes. NOV Google indicates that they will pay closer attention to fresher content through the release of this algorithm change. This update focused primarily on displaying more time sensitive results in queries that war- ranted it. 03 14 PANDA UPOATE 3.1 NOV The November 18th update is commonly referred to Panda 3.1. Many analysts in hindsight believe that the 10/19 known as Panda 2.5.3 should really have been named 3.0 because of its significance. Update 3.1 was considered minor. GOOGLE ANNOUNCES 18 ANOTHER 10 UPDATES In their blog Google an- DEC nounced another set of 10 up- 01 dates to their algorithm.
