But can making your own repairs really be worth the time and effort required to do them well? BIG SAVING ON SMALL REPAIRS THE COST OF A MECHANIC'S TIME Shops earn revenue from these two main components of service: Flat Rate Billing Most shops follow a labor standards guide. This guide tells them how long the repair should take the average mechanic. The flat rate is what the customer pays for labor regardless of whether the repair takes more or less time to complete.
