No GAIN! DRASTIC WEIGHT CHANGES ON THE SILVER SCREEN Whether it's bulking up for the latest action packed blockbuster, or slimming down for dramatic effect, celebrities put their bodies through grueling and dangerous diets. Here we take a look at some of the most striking body image changes, all in the name of art. Christian Bale The Machinist 62lbs ----EL Christian Bale has dropped weight no less than 3 times in the name of art. His most dramatic transformation was in 2004 for the film The Machinist, surviving on just 275 calories a day. He regained all his weight, (plus a few Ibs more) for 2005's Batman Begins. -1--ER Robert De Niro Raging Bull 60lbs Robert De Niro trained with the real Jake LaMotta the in 1980 biopic Raging Bull. For the film's opening and final scenes depicting his later years he piled on the pounds by eating 3 extra large meals a day consisting of pasta, meat and butter, with sides of ice cream and beer! Anne Hathaway Les Misérables 25lbs Anne Hathaway slimmed down significantly to play the role of Fantine in 2012's Les Miserables. In the months leading up to shooting her first scenes, she embarked on a strict diet and during her final week, ate nothing but oatmeal paste and water. Yummy! Tom Hardy – The Dark Knight Rises 30lbs Tom Hardy is fast becoming accustomed to bulking up for film roles. He did so in 2008's Bronson and again in 2011 for the film Warrior. But his most noticeable transformation came later in the year for role of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises reportedly doing around 2,500 press-ups a week! Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby 191bs Hilary Swank bulked up for her role in 2004's Million Dollar Baby starring as a female boxer alongside the film's co-star and director, Clint Eastwood. She underwent extensive training with the aid of personal trainer and the extra effort earned her an Oscar for the part! Jared Leto Chapter 27 67lbs 9ohn Leto is no stranger to altering his image for film roles. He gained a whopping 67lbs to play Mark David Chapman in the film Chapter 27 by drinking Lenlion microwaved pints of ice cream mixed with soy sauce and olive oil, every night.yuck! Rene Jelwegger - Bridget Jones's Diary – 201bs Zelwegger famously piled on the pounds not once but twice for her role as the eponymous British heroine Bridget Jones. Gerard Butler's weight was unchanged for the 2007 historical action film 300. He did, however, embark on a grueling 4 month exercise regime to get in shape. This, coupled with a high protein diet, complex carbohydrates and gallons of water meant he lowered his body fat whilst building muscle. (Not to mention some help from CGI and some well placed airbrushing!)
