Nielsen's People Meter celebrates 25 years

Happy 25th Birthday! A Timeline of Important Nielsen People Meter Moments NPM panel currently has over 20,000 homes or approximately 45,000 persons. Nielsen plans to introduce Local Media hybrid measurement, which will quadruple effective sample size in metered markets and double effective sample size in diary markets. 2012 Nielsen includes NPM total home Internet measurement and creates 2010 Cross-Platform Homes panel. Has over 11,000 meters on NPM home computers. Analog to digital television (DTV) transition completed, an enormous change for the industry and for consumers. Advances in screen technology, access to the Internet, and digital compression expand HDTV, portable media, and Internet-driven television consumption. 2009 Nielsen introduces commercial minute ratings (average viewership for only the commercial time within a television program), including C3, as a measure of the ratings for average commercial minutes in live programming plus three days of DVR playback. 2007 Nielsen's Active/Passive meter enables measurement of digital television. Nielsen measures non-live viewing such as digital video recorder (DVR) playback. Metered market sample expansion continues. 2005 Local People Meter (LPM) is rolled out over the next few years in 25 markets. There are 210 individual local markets in the U.S., identified by Nielsen as Designated Market Areas (DMAS). Nielsen adds out-of-home viewing from NPM college kids away from home. 2003 NPM sample expands to 6,000 panel homes. The first high-definition television (HDTV) sets hit the market. 1998 Nielsen, Univision, and Telemundo launch first national Hispanic television service in the U.S. designed to report the viewing to Spanish language television and to measure the diverse viewing habits among Hispanics living in the U.S. 1992 unIvISion National People Meter (NPM) introduced into 2,000 panel homes to accurately gauge who is watching and when, so as to produce national overnight prime time television ratings with daily demographic data. 1987 nielsen Source: Nielsen
