New Year Luck Foods From Around The World

LUCKY FOODS for the NEW YEAR Many of the foods people traditionally eat for luck on New Year's Eve are believed to bring a year of prosperity and good health. Below are some of them: 12 Grapes - Spain The Spanish and Portuguese eat twelve grapes as the clock chimes twelve times for midnight, to symbolize the twelve months of the new year. Soba - Japan In Japan, long buckwheat noodles symbolize long life, and are therefore lucky-but only if you eat them without chewing or breaking them. Vasilopita - Greece Vasilopita is a lemon-flavored cake baked with a coin inside. Whoever finds the coin gets a year of good luck. That, or a chipped tooth. Round fruits - Philippines In the Philippines, eating any round fruit is a common New Year's tradition as it symbolizes luck. Oliebollen - Netherlands These are balls of fried dough sweetened with sugar. Dutch folklore tells of nasty beings that would cut people's stomachs open during the winter, and if the stomachs contained the special pastries, they were immune to the sword. Black-eyed peas - Southern America In the American South, you must eat black-eyed peas, and greens on New Years Day to ensure a good year ahead. Black-eyed peas represent good luck, and greens symbolize money. Boiled cod - Denmark Serving cod to people during the New Year is considered to bring good luck, prosperity, and happiness in the coming New Year. Herring - Germany German folklore says that eating herring at the stroke of midnight will bring luck for the next year. Tteokguk - South Korea It is tradition to eat tteokguk on New Year's Day in South Korea because it is believed to grant the consumer good luck for the year and gain a year of age. The dish consists of the broth/soup with thinly sliced rice cakes. Lentils - Italy The Italians believe eating lentils at midnight on New Year's Eve brings good luck. This might be due to the fact that lentils resemble gold coins.
