But before making it to these dizzying heights in the states, Spotify began as a little startup in Europe. Many music-based startups begin their existence in Europe because of the strict music regulations in the US. If they are successful however, they may make the move across the pond. Many music-based startups begin their existence in Europe because of the strict music regulations in the US. If they are successful however, they may make the move across the pond. Spotify offers a range of services from free accounts to paid subscriptions. In January it had 3 million paying subscribers. $: Between its intial European launch and its US launch, Spotify raised an impressive $189M.
