MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment Options Multiple Sclerosis is a demylinating disorder of the central nervous system. It is due to breakage in the myelin sheath, a thin sheath covering the axons (the stems) of the neuron (the nerve cell). The cause of this debilitating disease is not yet known although there are various theories to it. Symptoms and Signs may include Visual impairment (demylination of the optic nerve) Weakness in limbs Imbalance Dizzy spells Headaches NERVE DAMAGE Shooting pain in the spine Blood tests, to check for infectious or inflammatory diseases with symptoms almost identical to MS. Tests and Diagnosis Spinal tap (lumbar puncture), to rule out viral infections and other conditions with signs similar to MS. MRI can reveal areas of MS(lesions) on your brain and spinal cord. There are several modes of treatments available but there is no cure as of now. Steroids, interferons, copolymer are a few which are being extensively tried.
