Known best for establishing settlement houses in Chicago for immigrants in the early 1900s, Addams was a dedica- ted community organizer and peace activist. Barbara Mikulski Frances Perkins Mikulski began her political career by organizing neighbors to stop construe- tion of a highway through a historic area of Baltimore. Elected to the U.S. House of The first woman to be appointed to the cabinet of a U.S. president, Perkins served as Franklin D. Roosevelt's Secretary of Labor, drafting much of the New Deal legislation in the 1940s.
