Montreal is a major cultural hub of Canada and considered one of the best cosmopolitan cities in North America. Here are some interesting facts about this stylish Canadian city.
Boasting a populatio...
n of 1.6 million, the officially French city of Montreal is composed of 105 neighborhoods. Some of the more popular areas include the Plateau Mont-Royal with its hipster vibe, Outremont for its impressive dwellings and stylish eateries, St-Henri for its blossoming art scene and the Centre-Ville (downtown) where all forms of entertainment, restaurants and activities converge. If you get hungry on your journey through these interesting neighborhoods, consider picking up some poutine, Montreal’s signature food made of fries, cheese curds and gravy.
Montreal’s top employers are Bell Canada, the Jewish General Hospital, the Canadian National Railway Co. and the National Bank Financial Group.
Most people get to those and other workplaces via public transportation, thanks to the STM (Société de transport de Montréal) with its handy 68 metro stations, and over 200 bus routes. Alternately, there are scores of Montrealers who prefer using their bicycles for work and play during the summer via the city’s 650 kilometers of bike paths.
Some of Montreal’s most notable landmarks speak to its historically Catholic roots, such as the massive St. Joseph’s Oratory perched atop Mount Royal (the very mountain from which the city of Montreal derived its name) and Notre-Dame Basilica at the heart of Old Montreal. Another form of “religion” you may encounter in the city is its inhabitants’ undying passion for hockey. Indeed, the Montreal Canadiens have won a record 24 Stanley Cups since their inception in 1909.
