Modern IT
MODERN IT SMALL VS. MEDIUM BUSINESSES Three major technologies that have contributed significantly to our modern way of life are virtualization, cloud computing, and mobile devices. Like everything else, these technologies have affected small and medium businesses (SMBS), but is there any difference between how they're used by the smallest companies and those businesses on the cusp of going enterprise? VIRTUALIZATION 1 RUNNING SYSTEMS WITHOUT HARDWARE Virtualization's been around the longest, but while mid-sized business have jumped on board, the smallest businesses have held back. Businesses expected to be virtualized by the end of 2013: SMALLEST 60% (>20 EMPLOYEES) MID-SIZE 87% (250-999) CLOUD COMPUTING 2 RUNNING SYSTEMS OFFSITE AND AS A SERVICE With cloud computing, the tables are turned, however. For the smallest businesses, the promise of the enticing "as-a-service" is stronger than for those businesses that probably have their own internal IT. Businesses expected to use at least one cloud service by the end of 2013: SMALLEST 74% (>20 EMPLOYEES) MID-SIZE 60% (250-999) BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) 3. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF MOBILE COMPUTING With the advent of cloud computing and mobile devices, employees can now work from anywhere they want, using their own devices and interacting with data through the cloud. Once again, the smallest businesses lead the charge. Businesses supporting BYOD policies in 2013: SMALLEST 69% (>20 EMPLOYEES) MID-SIZE I11 53% (250-999) Businesses who fully embrace BYOD: D000 28% SMALLEST (>20 EMPLOYEES) MID-SIZE 13% (250-999) spiceworks.com/marketing/state-of-smb-it/ pages.spiceworks.com/byod-mdm-report.html STORAGECRAFT.
