MARIJUANA USE ACCORDING TO 3.2X more likely to be heavy drinkers SCHOOL GRADES: 3X more likely to report frequent drunkenness 25% of college students report academic problems caused by alcohol: E E E 48% 30% 19% 10% DIF 21.6% fall behind in schoolwork 29.5% miss class because of alcohol WHY ARE TODAY'S YOUTH SO SUSCEPTIBLE TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE? AVAILABILITY 81% of 12th graders say they could get marijuana EASILY 88% also say alcohol would be fairly or very easy to get. EXPOSURE 66% of students have consumed 27% by the end of 8th grade alcohol by the end of high school 49% of high school students have already used an illicit drug in their lifetime UNFORTUNATELY, THIS TREND PERSISTS THROUGHOUT COLLEGE: 40% of college students drink alcohol excessively 16% of college students have an alcohol use disorder 22% of college students use drugs WHAT'S THE SOLUTION? PREVENTION THROUGH PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AMONG ENROLLED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: 68.4% have parents that limit time with friends on school nights 83% have parents who make sure they complete their homework 79.4% have parents who provide help with homework PREVENTION THROUGH ACADEMIC INTERVENTION PROGRAMS Life Skills Training (LST) programs start in middle school and continue with booster sessions as a student progresses. The rate of drug use was 44% lower at the end of high school for the LST students when compared to students not enrolled in the LST program. INITIATION OF A DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM WHEN NEEDED Generally, 1 in 3 16-to-25 year olds who seek help will improve substantially. WHEN LOOKING AT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES: 71.1% of students who continue to abstain from drugs, following completion of a drug treatment program, successfully graduate high school. 82.6% of students who abstain from alcohol until the 21 legal drinking age and who have completed a drug treatment program successfully graduate high school. Just 28.6% of students who relapse to a chronic drug use pattern achieve a GED.
