McMaster University - Spring Convocation 2013

SPRING 2013 CONVOCATION The question I would ask you to consider today is this: where will your university education eventually find its value, and where would you hope to see its greatest effect? How will your life as the proud holder of a McMaster degree intersect with and address the large questions facing our species and our planet? - Patrick Deane, President McMaster University The Mace and the Bedel: During each Convocation ceremony, the University Bedel carries the mace to and from the platform at the front of Hamilton Place. Once the proceedings are underway, the mace is proudly displayed on an ornate table, resting on a velvet cushion. The mace was a gift to McMaster in 1950, from the Class of 1900. The mace and the Bedel are both symbolic protectors of the Chancellor. The Chancellor: Since 2007, Lynton "Red" Wilson has presided over each Convocation from a massive oak chair that bears a carved representation of an early McMaster seal. The Chancellor requests that members of each graduating class rise from their seats, and admits each new graduate to his or her respective degree. Suzanne Labarge, McMaster's new Chancellor, will oversee the Convocation proceedings beginning this fall. The Hood: The academic hood worn by each graduate is viewed a symbol of admission to a McMaster degree, and is used by universities all over the world. This tradition is derived from clothing worn during medieval times, and each hood is coloured to represent a different program or faculty at the University. I he Coat of Arms: McMaster's traditional and sacred emblem was the personal insignia of Senator William McMaster, whose gift of $900,000 in 1887 established the institution that we know today as McMaster University. The coat of arms can be seen on the backdrop behind the Convocation stage.
