Lupus

LUPUS Lupus is a rare long-term illness affecting the immune system. The cause is often excess antibodies in the blood stream which attack themselves and other parts of the body. Red rash over the cheeks and nose SYSTEMIC (the "butterfly rash') LUPUS (SLE) What is usually meant under the term 'lupus affects any body tissue and organ. Chest and hearth sharp pains Sharp pains in the kidneys and lower back area DRUG-INDUCED LUPUS Hypersensitivity to certain medications. Joint and muscle pains Approximately 50,000 people in the UK have Lupus More common in people from Afro-Caribbean, Asian, or Lupus affects more Chinese origins. 15-50 years old 90% of Lupus patients are women PREVENTION v Become well-educated about lupus DIAGNOSIS v Offset fatigue by rest and by pacing daily activities - Try to resolve stress, depression, pain or anger - Through blood tests - Often mis-diagnosed as some musco-skeletal diseases. v Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and fluorescent lights v Be open with family and friends on lupus unpredictability v Develop new interests and skills if wished and if able v Ask for help from family, friends and health professionals TREATMENT No known cure.
