The long road of NAFTA Since coming into effect in 1994, NAFTA has made a tremendous economic impact on the USA, Canada and Mexico. Let's take a look at how far we've all come! 1992: The NAFTA agreement is announced in Washington, DC after 14 months of negotiations. Possibty leading to the creation of world's wealthiest trading bloc 1994: The beginning. NAFTA comes into force. No one knows what to expect 2001: USA-Canada softwood lumber dispute begins. US lumber industry accuses Canadians of "discriminatory pricing" By 2006, Canada had sold about $2.6 trillion worth of goods with a $60 billion surplus 2009: Ban on Mexican trucks operating on American Roads in March 2009: London Court of International Arbitration rules that Canada was in breach of softwood lumber agreement due to improperly calculating quotas. Ordered to pay 10% additional export charge 2011: Ban on Mexican trucks on American roads lifted by Obama What's next? Time will tell.
