Londoners were worried about the 9.3 billion costs of the 2012 games. Thankfully the whole thing went beautifully with Team GB winning the biggest haul of 65 medals in well over one hundred years. The additional government cost of 264 million in elite athletes funding demonstrates how Britain achieved third place in these Olympics. The average cost of each medal is well over 4 million each with the Hockey medal the most expensive at over £15 million. Can Britain afford to sustain this level of expenditure for glory and medals in future games? by the way the after cost of the games is 156 million, which is the building cost of two hospitals.
The population of Britain is split on the issue, some tax payer’s value national glory others would prefer the money spent on issues like preventing child poverty. One thing is for sure like Australia the UK will be hard pressed to keep this standard up for future games.
