Life In The Cloud

VISUALIZING LIFE IN THE CLOUD As technology progresses more of our lives are being held not on our personal computers, but by websites on servers that we never see. We are going to look at the ongoing transition from our computers to the cloud. WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING? YOUR COMPUTER Normally when you are using a computer you use applications that are stored on your hard drive. You pay for an application one time, and use it as often as you like. APPLICATION When you use the application it is run on the computer in front of you. With cloud computing, you access an application being run on a server operated by someone else. This is an application "in the cloud". Often these applications are paid for on a subscription basis. THE CLOUD YOUR COMPUTER APPLICATION NETWORK Applications are accessed through the internet. Usually, you interact with the application through a web interface like a website. 56% OF INTERNET USERS USE A WEBMAIL SERVICE LIKE HOTMAIL, YAHOO, OR GMAIL One of the first ways people used cloud computing was to access and store their email. Instead of buying a server and learning to set it up to receive email they signed up for an email address at a website like Yahoo or Hotmail. The email was sent to the email provider's server, and people accessed their email from any computer, through the web. Their email lived in the cloud. WHAT ARE WE USING CLOUD COMPUTING FOR? People have quickly begun to take advantage of streaming video websites instead of downloading shows or recording them on a DVR. OVERALL ONLINE VIDEO STREAMS GREW 48.9% COMPARED TO MAY LAST YEAR 2008 62.2 MILLION Hulu's total streams in April grew 490% 373.3 MILLION 2009 compared to last year. Streaming music websites such as Pandora and Last.fm have also seen growing interest, as people choose to listen to music on-demand online rather than gather a large music collection on their hard drive. Last.fm Unique Visitors 2008 | 2009- 3,000,000 2,500,000 AUGUST 09 2.000.000 1,500,000 Pandora's JUNE 2008 visitors in June grew 89% JUNE 2009 compared to last year. On SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2009 TechCrunch predicted that Apple would soon be moving iTunes into the cloud. Because movies and TV shows are so large, a large collection takes up an unreasonable amount of space. TechCrunch predicted Apple would allow streaming of purchased movies, TV shows, and even songs from Apple's own servers. WHAT ELSE? Google is an increasingly large part of our move towards cloud computing. Popular applications like Google Maps introduce people to using applications on the web, maintaining the same speed and interactivity as an application run on their computer. NETBOOK -2007 400,00 sold SALES -2008 1.4 Million sold -20097.7 Milion sold PROJECTION The Information Network As our information is decentralized, we are able to access it from a variety of interfaces while we are on the go. Smartphones and netbooks allow us to interact with our data, located on faraway servers with almost unlimited storage capacity. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE? "Lower costs of market entry / application deployment, faster payback on development costs, and superior return on investment will make cloud-based platforms the target of choice for both entrepreneurial and enterprise developers." Peter Coffee Director, Platform Research, Salesforce.com "As cloud computing gains wider adoption, the concept of a site as we know it is changing significantly. With content, technology and infrastructure coming from multiple vendors in the "cloud", analyzing where the problem occurred and hence managing the end user experience will become extremely complex." Ben Rushlo Director Web Performance Consulting, Keynote Systems "Increasingly, individuals are characterized by a body of digital information. And that information needs to live on over a period of decades-the rest of our lives-beyond the lifetime of any device you might have. So everybody is going to need somebody to be the custodian of their information. Just like we don't put our money under the mattress anymore, we put it in the bank. So most of us will become customers of an "information bank" and in so doing become dependent on the cloud. You can see this trend already starting with hosted e-mail services like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc." Paul Maritz CEO, VMware Pewinternet.org 9/12/08
