Librarians in the Digital Age The rising popularity of digitized archives, web-based content creation, and electronic media has shifted the way communities use libraries in the 21st century. But have computers made the librarian a fixture of the past? Hardly. Learn more about the unique role librarians play in digital information management. THE LOCAL LIBRARY: A Changing Community Resource Studies of library use, from private research institutions to public branches, have shown a rapid increase in digital media consumption in the past few years. 297.6 MILLION AMERICANS used library services in 2010 23.4% of visits involved use of library computing services each represents approx. 11 million library users at 86% of libraries offered wireless internet 17,078 PUBLIC LIBRARY outlets 67.4% of libraries had e-books in circulation in 2011 each represents approx 712 public library outlets 18.5 MILLION E-BOOKS TOTAL 3X THE NUMBER available in 2003! each device represents 1 million e-books A sample of digital library services available: ACCESS TO DIGITIZED CIRCULATION OF DIGITAL MATERIALS MOBILE APPLICATIONS ARCHIVES AND COLLECTIONS (AUDIOBOOKS, E-BOOKS, MUSIC) WIRELESS INTERNET AND ONLINE ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT ONSITE COMPUTER ACCESS Adapting to 21ST CENTURY LIBRARY NEEDS The American Library Association (ALA) has identified four dimensions of strategic library development: PHYSICAL TO VIRTUAL LIBRARIES INDIVIDUAL TO COMMUNITY LIBRARIES Balancing physical facilities and materials with increased demand for digital materials Accommodating individual needs while encouraging community participation by providing event and activity space COLLECTION TO CREATION LIBRARIES PORTAL TO ARCHIVE Transforming the library into a space not only of media consumption, but of media creation Balancing access to materials via networking with global libraries, and creating physical and digital archive holdings locally The Librarian's New Role The traditional librarian Today's librarian takes on the same duties, adapted for new media and user needs: played many roles: CUSTODIAN DIGITAL CUSTODIAN Selecting and caring for physical materials Providing access to electronic and physical materials Maintaining specialized knowledge of digital databases Evaluating electronic materials and acquiring licenses GUIDE DIGITAL GUIDE Assisting users in finding relevant materials Educating patrons about use of digital library services and generalized digital literacy Providing virtual service to users, often through library websites PR OFFICER DIGITAL PR OFFICER Developing relationships with database managers, electronic publishers, etc. Maintaining connections with community institutions and other libraries Hosting community events Partnering with other libraries to increase access to materials CHALLENGES TO LIBRARIANS in the Digital Age Handling publisher restrictions on e-books and digital materials Keeping up to date with the latest developments in digital media Increasing collaboration with databases and other libraries to maximize information access Improving technology access Do you have what it takes to spearhead the transformation of libraries in the digital age?
