Knowledge Flow in the Enterprise

Brainspace Knowledge Flow in the Enterprise IN THE NEW KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY THE SPOILS GO TO THE COMPANIES WITH A BRAIN. O WHAT IS KNOWLEDGE? Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. Wikipedia Knowledge Exists in People & Documents both Inside & Outside the Enterprise. INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION THE INTERNET & ELSEWHERE Www. Knowledge Management has come a long way, but there are still inefficiencies. Organizations still struggle with knowledge flow. 16% OF A KNOWLEDGE WORKER'S TIME IS SPENT SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION. IDC: "The Knowledge Quotient: Unlocking the Hidden Value of Information Using Search and Content Analytics," June 2014. THE FASTER KM WORKERS FIND INFORMATION OPPORTUNITY THE FASTER THEY BECOME EXPERTS. OPPORTUNITY o 44% of the time workers do not find the information they are looking for. 2 MORE EXPERTS MEANS PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED FASTER. E=mc OPPORTUNITY SOLVING & INNOVATING QUICKLY RESULTS IN MORE COMPETITIVE ORGANIZATIONS. o -$5,000,000 An organization employing 1,000 knowledge workers wastes over $5 million annually in unproductive search due to difficulty in finding information or lack of information availability. PROBLEM COMPARTMENTALIZED DATA The current approach in the enterprise is to organize data into rows and columns. These taxonomies have the unintended side effect compartmentalizing data. Much of the information that workers are trying to find is either locked away inside documents with no metadata, or buried deep within a siloed structure, virtually unfindable. PROBLEM IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT CREATING EXPERTS. THEY ALSO HAVE TO SHARE. Subject matter experts aren't necessarily writers. One of the challenges organizations face is knowledge hoarding. Finding ways to transfer and utilize expertise is a top prirority for knowledge-driven organizations. The Opportunity There are plenty of enterprise tools to help create taxonomies, search for and communicate knowledge. Further, their are tools that help curate content, search by keyword, and (attempt to) locate experts. Yet, there remains a gap among these six disciplines-a gap that, when addressed holistically, will create a truly connected organization.
